Hotel Vinschgau: The history of the “Bauhof” in South Tyrol

The “Bauhof” in Kastelbell belonged from the 13th century onwards to the noble lords of Kastelbell, who exercised jurisdiction in the lower Vinschgau on behalf of the sovereign rulers, the Counts of Tyrol, up until the early 19th century. The Hotel Bauhof was formerly one of the farms that belonged to a large landowner (spiritual or temporal) and was managed by a tenant. These farms were devoted almost exclusively to the tilling of the land (the meaning of the name Bauhof relates to the cultivation of the fields), with the harvest intended for market; animal husbandry was simply for the farm’s own requirements.

Holiday in the Vinschgau – a profound experience, a rustic idyll

The remotest corners of the hotel conceal some special secrets. One such place is our wine cellar, dating from the 12th century. Between the old stone walls, our own museum contains old implements and tools, barrels and bread storage racks, showing how everyday life was lived in former times. A cellar tour with your host means wine tasting and the chance to hear fascinating real-life tales, all in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere.

A cultural trip through the Vinschgau and to the Meraner Land

The Hotel Bauhof’s very own “nostalgia bus” represents a venerable reminder of the beginning of the motor age. Your host normally takes hotel guests on a tour of the cultural attractions that the Vinschgau has to offer. These include the Churburg in Schluderns, the Marienberg monastery in Mals, or Glurns, one of the smallest and most tranquil towns in the Alpine region. There is also of course a visit to the traditional weekly market in Meran and to the hills around Tisens with their view over the beautiful Etsch valley, as well as a visit to Castle Katzenzungen, which boasts what is probably the largest and oldest grapevine in the world.

Tradition & customs

The past is also recalled by the restored Bauhof Baumandl mill, where the fine traditions of the Vinschgau come to life as you watch your host grinding the corn.

To the apricots of the Vinschgau

As the inhabitants of the Vinschgau have known for centuries, the delicious apricots of the Vinschgau also make fine distillates. So, at least twice a year, the Hotel Bauhof produces its own schnapps. Your host has always dedicated himself to this craft with skill and loving care. The result is either the “Vinschger Luft” or the “Gewöhnlicher” made from the grape marc.
